Ken Powell only ever wanted to farm and work for Farm Bureau – and he’s done both in a big way. Having grown up on a farm and having served as Director of Field Services for the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, he knows agriculture and he knows North Carolina. Although he officially retired in 2012, he’s not slowed down. He and Wanda, his wife of 51 years, are seemingly as active as ever – they’ve taken up beekeeping and find great satisfaction in educating others about the importance and remarkable lives of honeybees. Ken also serves as a deacon at his church and volunteers with several other local organizations. Ken says, “I might wear out, but I don’t plan to rust out,” but he remembers to “smell the roses” and shares special family time with Wanda and their two daughters and sons-in-law and their twelve grandchildren.
